You guys remember the ol’ school R&B music from the 90′s don’t you? Songs like, “Grapevine,” “If You Love Me,” “No One In This World,” and “You” were all brought forth by some talented and beautiful sisters. These women are ALL singers and songwriters in their own right. Monifah Carter, Faith Evans, KeKe Wyatt, Nicci Gilbert, and Syleena Johnson will all be starring in a TV One original series called “R&B Divas”.
This show will be like no other because it will showcase the natural sisterhood between these 5 young ladies. You will see some disagreements between the divas but for the most part, it’s all love. Each one uplifting the other as they try to re-start their career while maintaining a functional family life. Here’s a recap of the “R&B Divas!”
KeKe Wyatt – KeKe Wyatt is an Indianapolis, Indiana-bred girl who grew up in an extremely musical family. Wyatt first sprang on to the scene when she was 18 years old. Her duet with R&B artist, Avant, put her on the map musically. “My First Love” was an immediate crossover hit. KeKe has always been affiliated with Beyonce in some point and time because both of them were in a childhood girl group, “The Dollz”. Wyatt has had some drama in her life too. On December 25, 2001, Wyatt stabbed her “allegedly” abusive husband, Rahmat Morton, 5 times and was arrested, however Mr. Morton decided NOT to press charges. Since that chapter in her life, KeKe has found TRUE LOVE with someone else, remarried, and is NOW the Mother of 6 beautiful children. Her latest cd, “Unbelievable”, was released last year.
Monifah Carter - Monifah Carter is a soulful singer who had moderate success in her career. Her most famous songs were in the 90′s. You all may remember, “I Miss You”, “Touch It”, and “You”. She was also a trend setter because everyone wanted their hair like Monifah’s. A slant cut to the right made everyone mimic the sexy look. This time around, the Spanish-Harlem native wants to go further in her journey. She plans on using this reality show platform to her advantage as she revamps her musical career.
Syleena Johnson -Syleena Johnson has lived and breathed music since she was born. The 35 year old’s father is Hi Records singer Syl Johnson. She was always musically inclined. Johnson may be best known for her smash hit “Guess What?” With her bluesy yet soulful sound, it’s so easy to get drawn into the sultry voice. Not only is Syleena currently working on her music career, but she is also a two time Mommy. She and her partner, Assistant Coach of Praire State College University Kiwane Garris, have 2 boys mtogether. One is 5 years-old and the youngest was just born a year ago. Even though the Illinois native has small kids at home, this does not defer her from keeping her eye on the prize.
Nicci Gilbert – One of the co-producers and co-creators of the “R&B Divas” is none other than former Brownstone lead singer, Nicci Gilbert. In 1995, Brownstone was the first artist to be signed to Michael Jackson’s MJJ Records. The R&B group remained together long enough to record only 2 cds, afterwards the trio went their separate ways. Nicci started to concentrate on other aspects of her talent. She starred in the long-awaited Tyler Perry stage play called, “Meet the Browns where she played the roll as Brown’s fiesty and DRUNK sister Vera. The 41 year-old also tried her hand in the film industry as she produced and directed the dvd musical called, “Soul Kitten Cabaret”. Now-a-days, Nicci is STILL going strong and has recently started a new plus-sized clothing line called “Curvato.” Gilbert is a newlywed. She and her husband, Lenny Daniels, have been married for almost 2 years. Surely we will see some of Mr. Daniels on screen as well.
Faith Evans -Faith Evans is one of the most well known R&B divas of all. Some people are familiar with Evans because of her marriage to the late great Notorious B-I-G. The rap-icon was shot and killed in March of ’97. Only 5 months after he and Evans welcomed their baby boy CJ into the world. Faith KEPT the faith in her God, her family, and her gift from God. The First Lady of Bad Boy records continued to move forward and kept the music coming. Evans have had many R&B hits that were just as successful on the Pop charts. Faith is also a producer, actress and songwriter, but her first role is always Mother. The 39 year-old has one daughter (who is her eldest) and 3 sons: CJ and the 2 whom she shares with ex-husband record company executive Todd Russaw. Evans is said to be looking forward to this new reality-show in which she’ll be co-starring. Faith is also co-creator and co-producer of the project. She says that she hopes this series will be therapeutic for her and the other ladies.
Finally! Real TALENT with real life issues, ALL rolled up into one. Who will be watching R&B Divas this August on TV-One?
